The heat pump water heater is a special system which uses electricity to power a condenser that extracts heat from the air pumps into water. It may be used for heating swimming pools, and has a much lower operating cost than a gas-based pool heater.
It sucks in air from the environment is around it, compresses it, and then uses a heat exchanger to transfer the heat from the compressed air into the water. If you ever studied physics, you may remember that air heats up as it is compressed, and the air is pumped out the system, much colder. This is an identical process to air con, but in reverse. You can run your heat pump water heater in reverse to call the watered-down instead of eating up, but it is much more typically used to heat water.
The cost of using a heat pump water heater is much much lower than using a gas powered water heater, as it only uses a touch of electricity, compared with an enormous quantity of costly gas. Considering that this is such a cheap system to operate, is there any reason at all why folks occasionally like to use gas powered systems? One reason why folks occasionally like gas water heater systems is because gas heaters are a lot cheaper to install, and though you can spend as much as $3000 a year to heat your pool with a gas heater, in the short term it basically is cheaper to use a gas powered system. After a few years, thanks to the lower operating costs, the heat pump becomes the cheaper option.
So if you consider that you’re going to have your pool filled many years, and that you will be heating it all the time, you can see why a heat pump water heater is a cheaper option in the long game. However, in the chillier times of year, it may not provide enough heat, as it is only in a position to recycle the heat that is already in the air. For this reason, you may want to install it alongside a gas powered pool heater, so that you can give it a lift when needed.
